RE: The 65 mpg Ford the U.S. Can't Have

Would someone explain to me, I've never questioned this law, but when it come to fuel, why can't we use No. 1 diesel isn't that a good fuel to run in a diesel vehicle. or is Europe running this in their cars and trucks. I know its off topic but my question sort of relates.
thanks

RE: Something new I've learned about tires.

This might be old news to some or maybe even most of you but I didn't know this.
My wife's minivan had a slow leak so I took it to my local tire guy Dave, he owns TireTech in Williamstown (for you local people). He's a great guy and he knows tires inside and out. Anyway while his guys were patching my wife's tire I commented about a set of tires he had in the show room. I wanted to get them when my Firestone Transforce AT's wear out. They were Toyo Open Country AT's. They were nice looking. Really deep tread, nice pattern.
He said they are a nice tire but then he asked me if I tow anything. I told him about my TT and he said that open shoulder tires are more unstable than closed shoulder design tires when it comes to towing heavier loads. He told me he had a guy who had a 5th wheel come in who just bought a set of open shoulder tires off him and said that he almost lost control of his rig. It turned out to be the tires. Dave warned him ahead of time but he didn't listen. He put closed shoulder tires on his truck and no further problems.
Like I said some of you guys might already know this but it's news to me. Here are some examples of tires.
Toyo Open Country AT's (open shoulder)

Here are my tires...
Firestone Transforce AT's (closed shoulder)
http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires/firestone/fs_transforce_at_ci2_l.jpg
I had the same tire, Toyo Open country AT, never had a problem towing my 5ver throught the Rockies and Cascade ranges with them, but I sure didnt know about open and closed shoulders. Is this the same with all manufactures?

RE: 5.9 Cummins beats the 6.7 Cummins on the dyno.

While the numbers MAY be accurate as far as they go, it does not tell the whole story. For instance, the torque number for the 6.7L is given at the top end of it's torque range. The 6.7 makes all of it's torque at 1600RPM not 2750RPM! It is obvious that they are cooking the numbers to promote their ajenda. Another misleading magazine article and it needs to be ignored along with the rest of the liberal media.
I'm with donno on this one I have had both and no one can tell that the 5.9 will outperform the 6.7. I don't read those diesel magazines other than trailer life.
I second to motion! I've had both and if the wife can tell the difference in pulling with the 5.9 and now the 6.7 because she is amazed at the ease we pull hills.

RE: Is proper CG etiquatte fading away?

There seems to be an issue with people using walkways, sidewalks, and paths. What is their purpose then? The greenery is to be enjoyed by all not destroyed by careless people who don't think about the person who come next.
These are the same people that go off of the hiking trails, write on rocks and carve their names in trees. Afterall, it's just one. They don't get the idea that if one does so does another and then there is little left for one to enjoy. I seldom stay in a campground or rv park, but when I do I don't have a problem telling someone not to cut through my site.
Even at home, my pets have enough common sense to stay on the stepping stones, sidewalk and driveway.
I confess I have sometimes walked through grass when the pathway was blocked by people or animals - but I swear I have never written on a rock or carved my name or anything else on a tree (or a bathroom wall for that matter).
Don't get mad - I'm just havin' a little fun.
Ok - I get it - there are some really careless, ignorant, or even obnoxious people out there. But for the most part this issue is a minor inconvenience or annoyance, isn't it? Is it really worth getting upset over?
That handful of truly obnoxious people are the exception rather than the rule and they should and can be dealt with appropriately. I still don't understand all the fuss over someone walking harmlessly through a campsite. They shouldn't do it - and if they thought about it, they probably wouldn't do it. If you feel the need to offer them guidance, I think that's great. But bringing the bad feeling about it home seems like overkill to me.
Life is short and when we take our last breaths I doubt any of us will remember the people that walked through our sites. Heck, there are so many other "trespasses against us" that I'm sure will come to mind.
I don't know about you, but how can you enjoy lunch or dinner, outside, with people in you camp site or some kid riding a dirt bike back and forth
or a guy tha lets his dog do a poo in your site and walks away. sites like this are a good place to vent ,but to let others examine how they may be percieved as RVers or campers.

RE: Federal Controls on RVing Through Tolls

It amazes me that so many people do not realize that fuel taxes are supposed to fund highways. The federal government collects this money from states then divies it up however they want. A number of states do not get back what they pay in federal gas tax. The answer is not a new tax on road miles, we already pay that via our fuel, the answer is for the various government entities that collect fuel tax be required to spend it on the infrastructure. A new tax is never the correct answer.
you are right on, but the government won't listen, taxes for the road system. just like social Security. signed away in 63 and they blame the cause on babyboomers.

This is the point I'm trying to make. that the courtesy/respect for fellow Campers/RVers and the park owners is dwindling.

I love it. Does bring the thread back to reality.
I have yet to figure out why people with private homes leave them and go to a public place and become a sardine in a can of sardines and then whine about not liking the sardine (or its babies) they parked by or over or under them. :)

RE: Is proper CG etiquatte fading away?

I think the OP was trying to make a basic observation:
1. Most people do not appreciate others walking (or riding) through their campsite.
2. Lots of kids do it anyway.
3. They probably don't know any better because no one has taught them.
I would politely teach them.
You are right on your post and his post, but I'm responding to the title

RE: Is proper CG etiquatte fading away?

YES! to answer the question. I know I'm going to get yelled at, but some one has too. the rudist campers I've encountered are Utahns, trash and out of control kids, californians speeding in campgrounds, but there are good ones too, Idaho dirt bikes. why? Washington, let their dogs poop anywhere and not clean it up. Colorado barking dogs.
I RV to get away from noise and rude inconsiderate people, its not like it was 16 yrs. ago and I don't worry about Television in 2009 I have Sat.

RE: Sports Chassis VS. other MDT

I need Help!! i have a 350 dually.. not crazy about towing my 15k rig. seriously considering a sports chassis or even f550 or f650. even a 4500.. although i dont think a 4500 with a duramx and allison would be a whole lot better then moving to a real MDT.. I NEED ALL OPINIONS AND GOOD AND BAD ON THE SPORTS CHASSIS TRUCKS. WHICH ENGINE IS BEST.. ETC..
THANK YOU!!!!!
If you are in a Panic, I would first slow down and take in some fresh air.
First of all you do not have any real heavy weights listed.
You are using a gas truck that Screams at High RPM's.
I see a Diesel in your future. This is the first decision for you.
Are you planning on pulling trailers over 20,000.00lbs. This would be another decision.
You need to know that all Trucks have droped in price...So how much do you think my truck has gone down in price compared to a nice loaded 1 Ton diesel or a F450.
When I buy I look at resale value.
If you are planning on pulling trailers over 20,000lbs you may want a HDT.
Do you have any friends with a Diesel 1 Ton..Drive it with your trailer on it.
A truck that I like is the F450 it can handle weight over 20,000lbs that would be plenty for your weights listed.
I would skip all truck sizes between the F450 and the Freightliner.
How much and how far are you driving?
Britt
Very well put, but the op didn't mention if the 15k is the Dry weight so I'll assume it is.
I'm pulling a 33' tetonhome 14500max with an 07 Dodge DRW 6spd auto we do know the tow rating is 16xxxlbs I have no problems towing hills or slowing down on steep grades to keep a controlling speed generally 45 to 55 on a 6% grade. We've questioned what size TV if we go to a heavier 5ver that is why I like the points you bring up.:C

RE: I Need Help??

yes it is under warranty . It got 7years 115000km power train
Good; Momma and I had a vacation ruined with break downs one in Redvers Sack. then again in Chicago, I suggest you just waite until tomorrow morning and have a dealer check it out. I know its a pain especially if you have a schedual to keep, but peace of mind is better than a stressful drive wondering if the truck is going to fail.

RE: 3/4 ton or 1 ton?

Personally I would not have a Dodge Mega Cab as the bed is just too short for 5er towing in my opinion. Also, the Mega Cab suffers from lower payload capacity. get a standard extended cab and a long bed for a better truck.
ken
The Megacab's bed is 6.5 feet long, same as any other shortbox truck (Ford, GMC, Chevy). Ever see any of those towing a 5er? The Megacab bed just LOOKS shorter than it is due to the huge cab.
I agree with Txiceman, but it depends on the 5ver you're towing. some manufactures are designing their 5vers for the short bed. I have the 07 mega cab and towed my 33' tetonhome even with the slider hitch we had the fecal material scared out of us. I found a place that dodge would not void the warranty and coverted it to a long bed. what a tow vehicle it is, the expense was worth it

RE: My tow vehicle is banging over bumps

First thing I'd do if I were you. Revisit the WDH setup. If it was right. you wouldn't need several inches of lift. It would already be up. so that the TV would not bottom out so easily. After that. then look at your jacks, and shocks.
IMO this gentleman has the right idea, as a shade tree machanic I'd say you have a suspension problem.

RE: 07 Dodge 6.7 tow mpg revisited

With 7,500 miles on the truck the best I got towing 14,000# was 10.3... Non towing in town 12.5 and on the road 16.0.
Hope it improves with increased mileage. My 04 5.9 was getting 20.5 on the road non towing.
I don't think those are bad numbers.
